Bahrain is one of the GCC's most open and diversified economies. As a major financial hub, Bahrain hosts over 400 financial institutions and has built a reputation as a centre for Islamic finance, banking, and fintech. The country's gold market has strong trading activity, supported by a large expatriate community (55% of the population) from South Asia and Southeast Asia.
Fuel prices in Bahrain are regulated by NOGA (National Oil and Gas Authority) and the Ministry of Oil. Bahrain began fuel price reforms in 2016, partially removing subsidies, with prices now partially market-linked. The country applies a 10% VAT — the second highest VAT on gold jewellery in the GCC after Saudi Arabia's 15%.
The Bahraini Dinar (BHD) is pegged to the US Dollar at 0.376 BHD per USD (or conversely, 1 BHD ≈ 2.659 USD). This makes BHD the world's second-highest valued currency after KWD.
