India Petrol & Diesel Prices Today

Petrol and diesel prices in India are revised daily by the three Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs): Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum (HPCL). This daily revision system (introduced in 2017) links Indian pump prices more closely to international crude oil prices and INR/USD movements, replacing the previous fortnightly revision system.

India's fuel pricing structure is complex: the base price (from OMCs) is uniform, but the final pump price varies significantly by state due to State Government VAT rates (ranging from ~18% in some states to ~36% in others) and excise duties. This is why Mumbai residents pay notably more for petrol than Delhi residents, even buying from the same brand station on the same day.

India does not have Super 98 or the multi-grade system used in GCC countries. Indian fuel is primarily: Petrol (standard 91 RON, and premium 95+ RON variants like Power, Speed, Hi-Speed) and Diesel. Premium petrol brands (IOCL's XtraPremium, BPCL's Speed) typically cost INR 3–5 more per litre than regular petrol. India is also rapidly building out CNG and EV infrastructure as alternatives.

Frequently Asked Questions

India's fuel price includes: (1) Base price from OMCs (uniform nationally), (2) Central Government excise duty (uniform), (3) State Government VAT (varies by state, from ~18% to ~36%), (4) Dealer commission and local levies. State VAT is the primary cause of city-to-city variation.
The three Oil Marketing Companies — IOCL, BPCL, and HPCL — set the base price daily. However, the final pump price includes Central and State taxes set by the government. The Petroleum Planning & Analysis Cell (PPAC) under the Ministry of Petroleum monitors pricing.
Since June 2017, OMCs revise retail fuel prices daily at 6am IST. In practice, prices are often kept stable for extended periods when crude is volatile and the government wants to manage inflation. Large revisions tend to happen in batches rather than daily increments.
Regular petrol is 91 RON, suited for most passenger vehicles. Premium variants (IOCL XtraPremium, BPCL Speed, HPCL Power) are 95+ RON and designed for modern engines. Premium petrol costs about INR 3–5 more per litre. If your car manual specifies 95 RON+, use premium for better performance and engine health.
